Yes, IP is broken, and unfixably so.

I'm currently looking into deriving IPv6 addresses from nodes' WGS84
coordinates for ConsumeNet style of networks. 128 bits per se would be
plenty (1 cm resolution at earth surface, plus lots of subspaces for
InterPlaNut), but it seems the folks did cripple the usable bits. Of
course, "no one is ever going to need all 128 bits", "640 kBytes ought be
enough for everybody", etc.

I was planning to use a node labelling scheme to facilitate later
migration, but it's not as easy. The label needs to be additional, and one
has to start labelling the nodes now. Another thing to look into would be
mutual refinement, using connectivity.

I understand you concerns about interoperability, but the situation is
unfixable. You have to have to use a different transport layer. You can
always tunnel IP over it, too. The easiest entry points into geodetic
routing is 802.11b grassroot networks and LEO sat clouds, because they
don't rely on existing infrastructure.
