Well, perhaps it's all just hype.
You know, GlobalBrain, Webmind, Sysopmind, Twilightminds, Metaman, etc.

On July 6th, 2000 at 7:02 am EDT, an Artificial Consciousness started to
condense out of the Internet to a server located at http://www.mindpixel.com.
GAC, for Generic Artificial Consciousness, the public front end for the
MindPixel Digital Mind Modeling Project, began taking its first questions from
Poland and China. The first question asked of GAC was "Is Einstein a
scientist?" to which GAC correctly responded "TRUE".
GAC (pronounced JACK) is the world's first program to attempt to become
artificially conscious by talking to internet users world wide. Its goal is to
collect and validate 1 billion MindPixels (binary items of consensus fact)
over the next 10 years (Which means some 20 to 30 billion individual stimulus
presentations!). Once collected, the 1 billion MindPixels will be used to
train a neural network into true Artificial Consciousness. Eventually it is
hoped a computer system trained using GAC will be indistinguishable from an
average human being when asked any yes/no question.

The Mindpixel Corpus is the world's first and largest database of validated
consensus human knowledge. It is an ever improving approximation of the mind
of an average Internet user, constructed and owned tens of thousands of people
just like you from all over the world, speaking all of the world's languages.
GAC (pronounced 'Jack') is a first step toward true artificial consciousness.
By talking to GAC in clear and unambigious Mindpixels, you teach what it is to
be human. In doing so, you help create the Mindpixel Corpus, which is the
largest database of validated human common sense ever attempted to be
collected. When complete in 2010 it will have more than one billion individual
facts, entered by over two million individual people. The data entry alone for
this project is valued at more than $250 million.
A Mindpixel is a binary statement of consensus fact such as "Water is wet" or
"It is difficult to swim with ski pants on". The idea behind this project is
to collect as many such statements as possible from the world wide internet
community and validate them. The database will then be used to train neural
net based systems to mimic a human being when presented with Mindpixels. We
hope to have 2 million users registered by the end of 2003 and 1 billion
validated Mindpixels by 2010. The means about 30 billion transactions!
Eventually, it is hoped a GAC trained neural network will become
indistinguishable from any human being when presented with any yes/no
question/statement independent of whether or not GAC has seen that particular
question/statement before. GAC's database will also be used to develope the
first true images of the entire human conceptual network; the first true
images of the human mind (see sidebar).
Please register and talk to GAC. You can ask GAC any yes/no question that you
think will be either true or false for all people. When you do, your question
will be logged and presented to other users of GAC from which a probabilistic
reponse profile for that question will be built. You will also be asked to
respond to 20 Mindpixels other users have asked GAC. Please answer all of them
and answer them how you think most people will answer them.
Mindpixel.com will soon become a corporation and shares will be issued to each
person training GAC (20 shares for every valid Mindpixel and 1 share for each
valid validation). People who create invalid Mindpixels or who respond
inconsistently or maliciously will be tracked by GAC and have their shares
discounted proportionally). The GAC database, this web site and any products
dervied from GAC or GAC data (Think: Conscious Furby) will be the property of
the contributors of the data in proportion to their individual contribution;
in short Mindpixel.com will be a meritocracy. Revenue generated from ads on
the site and the Amazon Associates relationship will be used to maintain the
database and drive more traffic to this site. The sharholders will vote on the
distribution of all surplus monies (for example, some could be given as
research grants to people using the Mindpixel Corpus in real research).
