Ganymede's field is due to a dynamo mechanism, so then from something
like an iron core. There might be an induced field too, but it would
be secondary to the main dynamo-generated field.
HOWEVER:
Callisto's magnetic field is due to the inducted current in the ocean
of electrolyte.
Europa's magnetic field is also due to the inducted current in a
"salty ocean", but it is weaker than Callisto's, and doesn't 'fit the
induction model' as neatly as Callisto, apparently.

so what's with the asterisk-thingy?
