I don't give away all my work for free. My skills are fairly
rare. I charge an arm and a leg to use those skills for my
bread and butter with enough left over to use those same skills
(and others) outside my paying job.

Companies sell services and systems as much or more than just
software.

By generating income. Closing the source and shrink-wrapping a
package is only one of the ways to make money as a software
engineer.
