I've never heard of this Norman Spinrad person and I'm not impressed by
his brilliance. I just quickly glanced at his reviews and quickly found two
very stupid remarks.
1) "Nanotechnology [...] is probably beyond the scale limits set by
quantum mechanics." Gee, I wonder how life manages to get around these
"scale limits set by quantum mechanics".
2)"Someday, perhaps even soon, such software may be able to pass a
Turing test, but this is a long, long way from artificial consciousness"
The silly man almost sounds like he thinks consciousness is more difficult
to achieve than intelligence. And besides, Intelligence will cause the Spike
not consciousness.
I wouldn't be surprised if Mr. Spinrad had other foolish things to say too but I lost
interest and stopped reading. Out of 4 stars I give the review one and a half stars.
