FWIW I believe in the (relatively) "slow singularity." Like every other
intellectual development it will evolve (is evolving). It will certainly
develop on a pretty steep exponential curve so that, once it gets going, it
will advance at a mind-numbing pace. But it will be a curve nonetheless.
In fact you can see the flat end of the curve even now, say, in the
exponential increase in computing power per dollar and the occasional
startling advance in MEMS enabling tech, etc.

I doubt that even those who regard the "slow singularity" scenario as silly
(whoever that faction may be) expect us to leap from 20th Century tech to
strong AI in the course of a day or two. Now *that's* what I'd call silly.
