This sounds similar to an idea that Robin Hanson proposed (primarly for
uploads, I believe):

A new way to invest in human capital

"May 21 — Allan Browne was preparing for his final semester at Pace
University last fall when he discovered to his horror that he was nearly
$3,000 short of what he needed to register for classes. But instead of
taking out a loan and going deeper into debt, Browne turned to an
entrepreneur friend who agreed to “invest” in the computer science student
in exchange for a percentage of his future earnings."
