A quick question.
Medical and biological imaging uses greyscale images in excess of 12 bit
dynamics. There's definite loss in information when you go convert to 8
bit images, even though quality may be sufficient for some purposes:

Assuming, I want to scan, say, electromicrographs with up to 16 bit/pixel,
which choices do I have? Starting with scanning, and proceeding to
processing. Which hardware/software would you recommend? It can be
relatively high-end.
