Just started reading the wonderful but increasingly preachy Ursula Le
Guin's new novel THE TELLING, which opens on a world in the grip of
FF-tech. Yep, Fast Forward. It's all so awful; they have an Orwellian
central authority that spies on everyone all the time and mandates lurid
shouting ads and bans superstition in loathsomely uplifting tones and won't
allow people to use politeness because that's so phoney (hey, where *is*
Lee these days, anyway?) and like that. And their robocabs break down and
the food tastes awful. It's just terrible what Science will do to a culture.
