EXTRO-5: Feedback please on candidates for super-intelligence discussions

The ExI Web site is down as I type, but I'm told it should be back up
sometime today when a server problem is resolved. I will then update the
conference Web pages with a current agenda, initial speaker information,
and other material. In the meantime, I request your feedback to help me
shape two of the issues to be covered:

MACHINE INTELLIGENCE--THREAT OR OPPORTUNITY?
This theme includes two distinct though partly inter-related specific
issues. Following are brief descriptions, along with some candidate
speakers. (Note that since it's late and I'm tired, I've left in
already-confirmed speakers, along with already-contacted possibles, and
yet-to-be contacted possibles.)

ENSURING FRIENDLY SUPER-INTELLIGENCE: Strategic balance issues: Can we
constrain future AIs? Why relinquishment cannot work.

Paul Churchland. Eliezer Yudkowsky. William Calvin. Anders Sandberg. Robert
Bradbury (moderator?). Ray Kurzweil. Daniel Dennett. Marvin Minsky. John
McCarthy. Neil Jacobstein.

CONVERGENT OR DIVERGENT SUPER-INTELLIGENCE?
Can we keep up with AIs by integrating with technology?

Ray Kurzweil. Michael Arbib. Anders Sandberg. Daniel Dennett. Danny Hillis.
Paul Churchland. Vernor Vinge. Doug Lenat. Myron Flickner of IBM's Almaden
Research Center (Attentive Environment Group.). MIT's Effective Computing
Research Group. Stanford. Microsoft Research. Stuart Card, manager of the
user interface research group at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center and author
of The Psychology of Human-Computer Interaction. John Seely Brown, Xerox
PARC. Bart Kosko. Simon Levy. John McCarthy.

If you don't know some of these names but are interested in the topic,
please do a quick Google on them. I would very much appreciate feedback on
how interested you would be in having these participate (maybe you can give
me a ranking in order of interest) and, of course, include suggestions not
listed here.

Please respond *privately* as some of the above persons are on this list
and I'd rather avoid both swelled heads or deflated egos! Also, since my
DSL provider could go out of operation any day now, putting me in ISP
transition hell, please cc your responses to <e-shaun@extropy.org>

<hint> BTW, sign-ups for Extro-5: Shaping Things to Come are coming in well
for this stage. (Past experience shows that most people register close to
the event.) Early registration not only saves you money but helps us plan.

The conference Web pages can be found (if the server is back up) at:

Onward!

Max
