This has been known for years, and is a staple of the social constructivist
case (which is far from self-evidently wrong). See, e.g., THE GOLEM, by
Harry Collins and Trevor Pinch (Cambridge University Press, 1993). See also
my own THE ARCHITECTURE OF BABEL, Melbourne University Press, 1994, for a
discussion of the theoretical issues involved in constructivism.
