Research on computer supported collaborative learning has focused on
cognitive aspects with scant regard for motivation. This parallels
research on individuals'; use of computers for learning, where little
attention has been paid to learners'; motivation. In this discussion
paper, we identify some of the issues surrounding the design and
evaluation of motivating collaborative computer-supported learning
systems such as social affinity, cognitive ability, appropriate
feedback, distribution of control, the nature of the task and changes
over time. We provide guidelines for designing motivating
computer-supported collaborative settings and propose directions for
future
research.
