I saw on nanodot.org that Bill Joy will be speaking tonight, Wednesday
February 14, at 7:30 at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. Details are
at http://www.ctns.org/News/Bill_Joy/bill_joy.htm. Joy's topic will be
his usual, "Genomics, Robotics, and Nanotechnology: Science and Religion
Converse on the Shape of the Future." The talk will be followed by
comments by theologians and scientists, including:
*Kenneth W. Culver, MD, Executive Director in the Pharmacogenetics
Department Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation in East Hanover,
NJ. One of a team of scientists who pioneered the first clinical
applications of gene therapy to immunodeficincy disorders and cancer.
*Manuela M. Veloso, Associate Professor of Computer Science, Robotics
Institute, Carnegie Mellon University.
*James R. Heath, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Chemistry and
Biochemistry, UCLA.
I don't recognize any of these names but hopefully they will put up a
spirited defense. The robotics guy probably works with Moravec but who
knows if they agree on things.
Those of you in the SF Bay area might still have time to attend if you
see this message in the next couple of hours.
