Of course.. think of it as a metaphor for cancer.
Nobody wants to lose their job. If your livelihood depends on the perception
by the public of a vast problem, you're going to do everything you can to
perpetuate that perception (perpetuating the actual problem is just one way
to accomplish that but it's not neccessary - think of how much money Pat
Robertson has made from Satanic child abduction).
I know a grantwriter, and around the time of the Colmbine shooting I asked
her if she thought there would be more incidents like that. She said "I hope
so, I got 3 anti-school-violence grants just this week."
