Yep. That's one of Hofstadter's most charming, sly, characteristic tricks.

Not quite. Guess you missed the < hypopothesis > at the end of p. 545 (in
the UK Penguin edition; I assume pagination is identical), and the odd
stutter such as < each time time > (p. 604) and < is to to use > (p. 609);
and to be somewhat picky, < boustrophedonic > in the second line of Figure
40, p. 169, is a solecism, since <
boustrophedon > is its own adjective, a rather Hofstadterian fact. But it's
true that overall the text is *remarkably* clean.
