It could be rationalized that the power derived from the people in the movie is
not power, per se, but rather some form of esoteric processing capability
present in the human brain, or some metaphysical aspect that the high technology
interfaces.

That is to say, we can rationalize the utility of the humans in several ways,
calling it power, when it is not necessarily the power that generates work in a
Newtonian physical sense, but either some physical aspect of the human brain
that is not reproducible mechanically or some metaphysical aspect of the brain.

So, maybe the Artificial Intelligences (AIs) or the creator of the AIs is trying
to gain a spirit, or is otherwise tapping them.
