Ah, but tactically, the Gulf War environment was a cakewalk compared to Alaska
(and I doubt Canada would allow the US to stage out of BC or Yukon), the
potential to operate insurgency groups in Alaska is far greater than in the
deserts of the middle east. I doubt very much you'd get very much public opinion
among Americans for the government to shoot their relatives in Alaska.
