The probability that your vote for Bush will decide the election is so
ridicuulously small that it's not even worth considering. So why throw your
vote away on Bush? Why not give it to Harry Browne, who needs it much, much
more?
Back before the '96 election someone posted a parable on Usenet about voting
for third party candidates. I don't know the origin of the parable, and I
haven't been able to find a copy anywhere since, but it went something like
this:
Earth is invaded and taken over by a race of lizardlike aliens. In order
to appear democratic, they hold an election for the world leader. They run
two alien candidates (a "good guy" and a "bad guy") and a human candidate.
Suprisingly, the "good" alien beats out the human every time. Why? Humans
vote for him because they "Don't want the wrong lizard to win".
