In David Brin's novels it is for ethical reasons, I think. We do it
to improve the lives of animals, because greater intelligence is a
good thing. How many of us would go back to being animals, discarding
our human intelligence? Only a few. Intelligence is second only to life
itself in importance. Just as we are happy with the gift of intelligence,
the assumption is that animals would be as well.
