The other point about slave owners that people don't realize is that they
got more voting power. The slaves were counted as 4/5ths of a person for
representation purposes back then. The slaves couldn't vote, but their
owners got more electoral votes for their state.

The same thing is true today for prisons. All people are counted in the
census. The total numbers are used to size up districts. Felons can't
vote, but their portion of representation falls to their districts.
