        actually, i meant social divergence as separate from "personal
diversity." that is, most of the different directions that _nations_ have
taken seem to be driven by their respective niches in the resource
economy. now that i think about it, however, even this view doesn't seem
very relevant because new allegiances along different gradients will almost
certainly rise.
