Prof. Giorgio Stabile (History of Science, Rome University, La Sapienza)
found the @ symbol in many ancient documents.
Actually venetian and florentine merchants used the @ symbol during the XVI
sec.

At that time the @ symbol meant *anfora*, a capacity measure.
Prof. Stabile is quite sure that the man who invented the @ was Leonardo da
Vinci.
