Severe depression does not kill directly; neither does HIV for that matter. They both leave the body in such a weakened state that what normally you could handle becomes life-threatening. With AIDS the killer could be an opportunistic bacteria. With excruciating depression it could be severe stress coupled with a brain/mind which cannot any longer deal with it. Self-harm is seen as the only option at a certain point due to the distorted lens of the mind.
