I'm pretty surprised that no one here has mentioned the Nolan chart. It
reorganizes the political spectrum into a two dimensional view that takes
into account different view on both economic issues and social issues. It
clearly distinguishes conservatives, liberals (the modern sort),
authoritarians, and libertarians. There's a quick quiz consisting of 10
questions you can answer for yourself or a favorite (!) politician to see
where to place them. The Advocates for Self-Government (an organizations I
contribute money to) have a version you can play with at
http://www.self-gov.org/.
There are a few issues that don't seem to correlate well with the rest of
these, and would require more dimensions in the chart to display well.
These include hawk vs. dove, pro-life vs. pro-choice.
With a chart like this, you can see that Nader and Robertson share more
views (authoritarian) than either does with middle of the road
conservatives or liberals, even though the left-right spectrum says that's
what they must be.
