On a personal level, I struggle mightily with consumerism: I am an inveterate
"gadget head" and have some fairly expensive tastes in a few dimensions. I
AM better than I was about this a few years ago, though, being able to simply
tell myself "no" more effectively now than formerly when I feel lust for some
new gizmo erotically portrayed in an advertisement. Ironically, Moore's Law
has been helpful in this regard: I've found that telling myself that I can
get twice the functionality at half the cost in four years keeps my credit
card in my pocket pretty effectively.
