Eliezer forwarded a note from Richard Rostrum about a proposed bill that
would have legalized surreptitious searches. I knew I'd seen it before
in a reasonably authoritative source, but it took me a while to find it
since it was in my daily paper. Dan Gillmor reported on it about a week
ago, and there's a new article in his on-line column today. (5/28 if
you're looking for it.) Gillmor's column is on-line at http://weblog.mercurycenter.com/ejournal/.

According to the current story, The folks at the Center for Democracy
and Technology (cdt.org) say that appropriate congress critters have
been notified, and they've quashed the current bill. The wording was
well-hidden, and congressional watchdogs believe they will have to
continue to be vigilant.
