<Have you ever admired the pattern of rust spots on a junked car, or a
certain sunset or cloud formation, or layout of wood knots on a table?>

Yes! I have, I do. Probably every day.

 <For
me, abstract expressionism has the same kind of appeal. It *would* have the
exact same appeal even if it were just a house-painter's well-used drop
cloth. Leonardo Da Vinci remarked that he admired the patterns of urine
stains and spittle on some wall near where he lived.>

Oh yes! When I was a small child I loved visiting my great grandmother's
house and amusing myself with the water stains on the ceiling when I was put
down for a nap. I have, in fact, admired patterns on a drop cloth. What has
irritated me about Polluck's work is that people paid him to imitate these
sorts of patterns when they could be had by anyone(and, in my opinion,
better ones at that!) for free just by observing one's surroundings.

However, after reading what Natasha wrote about what Pollock's paintings say
to her, I must reconsider. Maybe there's something there I haven't noticed.

Being a slovenly housekeeper, I often have the opportunity to observe molds
growing on food abandonned in the back of the fridge. I used to say I
wanted to do a coffee-table book of close-up photos of these beautiful
molds. The variety of colors and patterns is astounding. Now that I have a
digital camera, my dream can come true, although instead of a paper book it
will have to be an e-book. I think I'll call the web site "Frigidaire
Landscapes"
