I agree, John, the original should only be quoted to meet
the following two requirements: [1] the reader must know
[1] WHAT POST in a thread and [2] WHAT PART of that
post the reply directed to.

For this reason, I prefer to configure my messager to place
the quoted material BEFORE the reply, and to use BOLD
rather than italic for the print type. When the original is
automatically placed AFTER the reply, it is all too easy for
the writer to forget its appendage.
