My Science News this week has in its book list:
"The Created Self: Reinventing Body, Persona and Self" by Robert J. Weber.
Quoting: "By drawing on the work of an earlier student of the self,
psychologist William James, and implementing modern findings of
evolutionary psychology, Weber examines personal transformation as a
chosen pursuit. He separates the entity of self into three categories:
the body, the persona, and the spirit. As he examines each, he illustrates
the reasons for one's identity and ways of changing it, be it through
cosmetic surgery or joining a cult. Weber reminds us that modern trends
such as tatooing and body piercing are intrinsically linked to forerunners
such as the cosmetology of the ancient Egyptians. Such avenues of expression
represent the means for persoanl reinvention, asserts the author." 350 p.
If anyone wants to review this and cast yea/or/nea votes I'd be interested.
