It helps if the patch of land is particularly barren/unoccupied (see
Israel's model), or even off-planet. (The Lunar republic? Or
Ceres/Pallas/Vesta/Europa...? The TRUE European Union ;)
However, a virtual state/phyle might be much more interesting. One can
define own (preferably digicash) currency (initially information
trading, if the density is high enough that face2face contacts become
probable (one can assist here with a wireless proximity service)), a
(minimal, since libertarian-flavoured) taxation system, etc.
At very least it would be fun. And something more permanent/localized
might grow out of it eventually.
