information specific to places DAV has been or physical places to which I plan to go.

You might ask, "Isn't everything local ? Isn't everything at some specific location in time and place ?".
Much of the stuff DAV is interested in is *not* local to one particular location.
For example, maps.
I'm also very interested in "timeless" stuff that is not local
to any particular century.
Still, "you have to start somewhere".
"Think Global, Act Local"
-- Canadian Futurist Hazel Henderson in the early 1970's.
"Think local, act global!"
-- Japanese internet pioneer Izumi Aizu in 1985
while saving Ikego Forest outside of Tokyo
--

People that I DAV have actually, physically met F2F.
The intersection of the 2 sets
"people I know in RL" and "people I know on the 'net".
If you wish to be listed here, email me your
preferred URL so I can add you to the list.
I encourage eveyone to put a few words on the 'net.
Every year it gets a little easier to
get online.
I think most of the above came online in 2005
(or at least that's when I found out about them).
There's a lot of
people that I think are interesting just from their web page
,
even though I've never even talked to on the phone,
much less talked F2F.
I suppose I should mention

,
as well as a few

Places in Tulsa OK that sell only new computers:
[FIXME: very incomplete. Check online phone book __ for more]
(practically all of these places sell
desktop, laptop, and palmtop (PDA) computers)
I like to look at and feel computer monitors and keyboards before I buy them.
I like to see used computers boot up before I buy them.
Computer cases and motherboards, though, I usually buy mail-order.
If I don't need a top-of-the-line system (say I'm building a FireWall or a DigitalVCR),
it's a lot cheaper to buy a used computer.
DesktopComputers LaptopRecommendations
Before buying a used PC for $300, check out what you can get new for $300:
"Kevin Savetz' Guide To Buying a Ridiculously Cheap PC"
"reviews, specs, buying tips, news, and hot deals on new computers for under $300. I only talk about ready-to-use PCs - these systems all come pre-built, with memory and a hard drive. You just need to add a monitor and (in some cases) install an operating system."

I always thought it would be cool,
(since high school, perhaps even earlier elementary grades)
instead of printing out a file onto several sheets of paper
and sticking it an envelope and mailing it,
to instead (low-mass)
mail a postcard with the maximum information density.
At first (in high school) I was thinking very, very tiny print
that one would need a magnifying glass to read.
Now I'm thinking more along the lines of
2-Dimensional Bar Code
machine_vision.html#2d_barcode
.
I think that the areas mentioned at
#postcard_tips
on the stamp-side of the postcard
are the only ones needed by the post office;
all of the remaining area (and all the area on the flip side) can be filled by barcodes.
(Do I get higher data density by squeezing the "to" and "return" address into a smaller space,
leaving more room for barcodes,
or by making them *large* (but perhaps thin lines / outline, not bold ?) and
using a overlapping/integrated barcode that leaves them legible ?)
(Should I try to put barcodes right up to the edge of the stamp,
even though the stamp cancellation mark will obliterate a few of the bits ?)
(naturally it doesn't help to put barcodes under the stamp,
and barcodes in the bottom 15 mm "postal barcode area" probably won't help).
See
todo.html#barcode
Standard 4 x 6 inch index cards (mine are 0.008 inch thick) are the only standard-sized blank cards I've found
that are the right size to mail using the standard postcard rate
($0.24 domestic rate, $0.75 international as of January 8, 2006).
( 3 x 5 inch cards are too small;
5 x 8 cards are too large).
A6 sized card stock should also be good, but I haven't found any locally.
(A6: 105 x 148 mm = 4.1 x 5.8 inch)
-
One needs to take care that one
leaves room for the address,
the return address,
the stamp,
and
the little barcode that the post office prints
underneath the address,
and a tiny amount of margin
to allow for edge crumple.
[FIXME: rant]
Rant: too many people forget that barcode,
and put information on a postcard
that the post office is forced to cover up with a sticker
to get it to go through their machines ... or worse,
it goes through the machines just fine,
which spray the barcode at the bottom, obliterating
whatever text was there on the postcard.
(That sticker is stuck flush against the bottom edge of the postcard,
about 15.0 mm wide, and about 110 mm long.)
The stamp cancellation mark is on the same side as the stamp,
covering the top 30 mm (about the same size as the stamp),
but often covering the right-hand 100 mm (extending far to the left of the stamp).
It's usually faint enough that large black text can be read easily through it.
One postcard I have in my hand has the postal barcode printed in black ink
on the same side as the stamp and the addresses,
but black text on that side interferes with reading the barcode.
Then it's printed again in faint orange (UV/IR sensitive ?) ink on the flip side of the postcard
(but still next to the same bottom edge).
Because of more black text there, it still couldn't be read.
Then a white sticker was applied and the orange ink printed on *that*.
(The post office uses stickers with "post-it"-like adhesive that are very easy to peel off ...
which I think is nice of them).

When my grandmother was a little girl,
just about everyone had personal calling cards
(and just about everyone wore hats,
and just about everyone carried a pocketknife to school).
Why are they so rare in 2003 ?
On the other hand, people now wear t-shirts with messages on them ...

When you ask the customer to fill out a form and mail it back,
try to make that piece of paper *smaller* than a standard business envelope
(4 1/8 inch x 9 1/2 inch),
so the customer doesn't need to fold it to get it in the envelope.
Preferably give the customer a pre-printed envelope also
(or an envelope with a "window").

software manual considerations

But that's the backwards way to do it. The design document is written
first, and is supposed to describe every last detail of the interface and
gameplay that will be drawn and programmed. It should be a fairly simple
procedure to 'evolve' it into a manual just by reorganizing and rewriting it to
give it a bit more of the background flavor of the game, and descriptions in
player's terms rather than programmer's terms.
Unfortunately, the game companies don't seem to use design docs anymore...
Often as not it looks like the total design work consists of little more than
some suit saying "Here's a 3-D engine, tack some pretty pictures on and come up
with a title."
Of course, there are some exceptions, but once upon a time it was the
other way 'round. Remember the original M1A1 Tank Platoon, which was known for
the manual alone being worth the price of the game?
