• I always thought it would be cool, (since high school, perhaps even earlier elementary grades) instead of printing out a file onto several sheets of paper and sticking it an envelope and mailing it, to instead (low-mass) mail a postcard with the maximum information density. At first (in high school) I was thinking very, very tiny print that one would need a magnifying glass to read. Now I'm thinking more along the lines of 2-Dimensional Bar Code machine_vision.html#2d_barcode . I think that the areas mentioned at #postcard_tips on the stamp-side of the postcard are the only ones needed by the post office; all of the remaining area (and all the area on the flip side) can be filled by barcodes. (Do I get higher data density by squeezing the "to" and "return" address into a smaller space, leaving more room for barcodes, or by making them *large* (but perhaps thin lines / outline, not bold ?) and using a overlapping/integrated barcode that leaves them legible ?) (Should I try to put barcodes right up to the edge of the stamp, even though the stamp cancellation mark will obliterate a few of the bits ?) (naturally it doesn't help to put barcodes under the stamp, and barcodes in the bottom 15 mm "postal barcode area" probably won't help).

  Standard 4 x 6 inch index cards (mine are 0.008 inch thick) are the only standard-sized blank cards I've found that are the right size to mail using the standard postcard rate ($0.24 domestic rate, $0.75 international as of January 8, 2006). ( 3 x 5 inch cards are too small; 5 x 8 cards are too large). A6 sized card stock should also be good, but I haven't found any locally. (A6: 105 x 148 mm = 4.1 x 5.8 inch)

• One needs to take care that one leaves room for the address, the return address, the stamp, and the little barcode that the post office prints underneath the address, and a tiny amount of margin to allow for edge crumple. [FIXME: rant] Rant: too many people forget that barcode, and put information on a postcard that the post office is forced to cover up with a sticker to get it to go through their machines ... or worse, it goes through the machines just fine, which spray the barcode at the bottom, obliterating whatever text was there on the postcard. (That sticker is stuck flush against the bottom edge of the postcard, about 15.0 mm wide, and about 110 mm long.) The stamp cancellation mark is on the same side as the stamp, covering the top 30 mm (about the same size as the stamp), but often covering the right-hand 100 mm (extending far to the left of the stamp). It's usually faint enough that large black text can be read easily through it.

  One postcard I have in my hand has the postal barcode printed in black ink on the same side as the stamp and the addresses, but black text on that side interferes with reading the barcode. When my grandmother was a little girl, just about everyone had personal calling cards (and just about everyone wore hats, and just about everyone carried a pocketknife to school). Why are they so rare in 2003 ?
