Enclosure: Gulbenkian Professorships Proposal
CALOUSTE GULBENKIAN FOUNDATION
SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
GULBENKIAN PROFESSORSHIPS IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
With the objective of stimulating a high level science research and
developing the communication of different experiences in the research
field, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, through its Science
Department, annually attributes Gulbenkian Professorships under the
following general conditions:
1. The Professorships will be attributed to foreign scientists and
researchers with international reputation, who would work for a
continuous one year period (2 - 6 months) in Portugal, coordinating
research work and seminaries, giving lectures to communicate their
experiences, evaluating the scientific activity of the Department and
proposing new lines of research, in conclusion: generating enthusiasm
among students and young researchers in view of a better development
of science, knowledge and culture. Four Gulbenkian Professorships will
be attributed per year. This attribution will be based on the
qualification results attributed to the benefitiating Departments of
this program and should be given to persons to whom the respective
Universities attribute the title of Visiting Professor or Invited
Professor.
2. All the expenses (trip, stay, etc_) are included in the Gulbenkian
Professorships, as also a symbolic payment.
3. The selection criteria for the proposals will be: type of activity
to develop during the stay; the interaction level with high level
centers in the country; the potential candidate "curriculum".
4. The departments, which are interested in benefitiating from this
program in 1996/1997, should send a proposal to the Science Department
in which the action of the Gulbenkian Professor within the
departmental activities should be mentioned.
5. The candidate's curriculum should be sent to the Foundation for
final approval.
6. All the Gulbenkian Professorships scientists will have to give a
lecture about research effects in modern society, in their specialty,
which will be included in the Gulbenkian series of lectures on
"Science and the Modern World". The Gulbenkian Science Department will
publish the text.
7. Every department will have to elaborate a document by the end of
the Professor's visit, focusing his/her activity during the time spent
in Portugal. This will help to evaluate the Gulbenkian Professorships
Program.
Thank you for your attention,
Miguel Cruz
