This may help.  We just attended a talk from Dr Philip Sharp, 
Nottingham University, UK.  He indicated that analysis of DNA 
sequences of various of the HIV genes and phylological analysis shows 
an HIV progenitor virus would have been present around 1960 with 
branching (ie spread) in the late 1970s.  This appears to have 
occurred via 2 seperate transmission events.  Find some of his 
articles perhaps...
