A wonderful book that explains the lambda repressor's function is called 
A Genetic Switch by Mark Ptashne.  There should be a copy at your 
favorite university's medical library or bookstore.

Hope this helps answer your questions.  This book is very easy to read 
and contains lots of great explanations, especially on basic techniques 
in molecular biology.
