phages

I am conducting an experiment in which I will have to distinguish between
lytic and lysogenic bacterial colonies that have been infected by phage
lamda. However, I have two questions:

1) Should I plate the bacteria in a lawn (so that "holes" are visible
where the lytic cycle has taken place), or should I streak the bacteria so
that individual and distinct colonies form?

2) How can one tell the difference between a lytic and lysogenic colony?

Thank you in advance.

Sincerely,

Melinda Lee
