RCMV induced meningitis/encephalitis in the immunosuppressed

I'm a second year student of medicine, and i'm confronted with the 
following problem:

When Specific Pathogen Free immunosuppressed laboratory rats are 
intrathecally infected with RCMV, they develop a meningitis, according to 
data extracted from our experimental setting, instead of an encephalitis.
Any literature about the relation between RCMV infected animals, and the 
development of a meningitis, or an explanation of the described 
phenomenon is welcome.
