Dear Nick
When I was an undergrad student, we had tissue culture lab - and we
use trypan blue to do "viable count" on cell lines.
We used another dye - I am sorry, I just can't recall the name
rapp..port...may be? this dye is opposit of trypan blue -
alive cells will pick up the color, but dead cells won't.
We used the book called Basic Virological Techniques, written by
Rozovo...or something like that. The formula of this dye is
in this book - you might want to check it out.
Sorry ....it was long long time ago.
