Host preference

I was wondering if a virus has a host preference, or if they
attack only one kind of cell.
For example: Hypothetically speaking, if a virus attacks
two cells. Will a virus attack one cell if another is not
available. Then if a second cell is made available would the
virus attack one specifically over the other or do they have no
preference at all.
I would appreciate if anyone would help me out with this
question.
