I have received funding for a research project on identifying natural
reservoirs of the equine paramyxovirus (aka equine morbillivirus)
associated with deaths of horses and one person in Brisbane last year
(Murray etal, 1995, Science, 268:94). The project will involve a
combination of lab work (virus isolation, monoclonal development,
blocking ELISA development, RT-PCR, sequencing etc) and field work
(trapping of animals, insects etc). I have access to 2 other
paramyxoviruses which were isolated from rodents in this state some years
ago, and intend to compare these in some detail with the equine/human
isolate. The success of the PhD will not therefore be entirely related to
the chances of isolating a similar virus from an, as yet unidentified,
natural host.
