common cold

I write "quizzes" on various human health issues for money. I'm always
on the lookout for sources and odd little factlets. (Like for the one on
dental issues, I learned that in the US, we buy only a little over a FOOT
of dental floss per capita annually. Even if HALF of us don't have any
teeth at all, that's a lousy record!!)

Anyhow, the next one is about colds and flu. Aside from hard facts on
CDC advisories on flu shots and stuff, I like to spice these things up
with some variety. And, lord knows, the cold has been with us forever,
and there is loads of lore. Anyone know about research on folk remedies
-- chicken soup, Vitamin C, and the like? Can we really get sick from
touching doorknobs, etc. etc.

Post or E-Mail, your call. Citations or professional credentials
appreciated. Personal testimonials my well be interesting or amusing,
but I probably can't use them...

E.
