I have read (in Laurie Garrett's "The Coming Plague", I believe) that Ebola was first reported in the late 60's or early 70's. Believe it or not, HIV has supposedly been diagnosed as long ago as 1959! So, apparently, these things have been around far longer than popular perception leads one to believe.
