Step outside the box.  Learn more about viruses, don't spend your time 
trying to put them in artificial classifications left over from the 
middle ages.

If an instructor posed this question to you, give up on him or her.  Ask 
the instructor for an exact definition of alive, precise but all 
inclusive.  He has as much chance of answering that as you do of deciding 
whether viruses are "alive."

Find a new source for science instruction.
