Albert, 
    you'd probably enjoy reading some of the contributions to Emerging   
Viruses (edited by Stephen Morse - pub. Oxford Univ. Press 1993).  There 
are a number of thoughtful essays on this subject.  For example, 
Karl Johnson talks about specific eco-systemic changes that caused (or at   
least influenced) Bolivian hemorrhagic fever (from the Machupo virus) and 
Argentine hemorrhagic fever (from the Junin virus). 
 
It's a good book and it's helping me stay informed...
