I just read the update from who (URL: http://www.who.ch/)
It basically says that the disease is most communicable in the 
hemorrhagic/illness phase.  Now I understand how it has affected so many 
people, and blood/body fluid precautions are not that much followed in 
the third world.  The presence of blood in the open (hemmorhage) could 
easily get to another person, if you don't use precautions (gloves, gown, 
eyeshields, etc).
