Keith
Totally agree with your views on the hype and paranoia re the Ebola
outbreak, there are lots of dedicated people putting in a huge effort on
this one, lets give them some support!

Re your questions on BVDV,
All batches of FCS in Australia will have both BVD virus and antibody. We
have found that even small quantities of neutralising antibody in FCS
will reduce the titre of cytopathic BVDV. You will therefore need to
locate a source of serum which is free of BVDV eg horse serum or serum
from a bovine which is free of persistent infection and also free of BVDV
antibody. Many veterinary diagnostic labs can do these tests.

Another important factor is that bovine testis cells (BT) are not
uniformly susceptible. You need to use them at low passage eg <5 for best
results. They should also be shown to be free of persistent infection,
and also therefore need to be grown in virus free serum (not FCS).
