According to the BBC World Service News this morning the outbreak has spread to another village in the Bandundu Province. No specific information as to # of infected of dead were given. This is not surprising given the reports of this outbreak go back to early April. I suspect that it may burn in two to three affected areas before subsiding. This outbreak may eventuall have a higher death toll than 1976 ebola zaire. I would like to see some discussion here concerning the search for the primary vector o
f this strain. Is it monkeys or cave bats, as was suggested by Richard Preston? I also find it interesting that the US media has followed the WHO lead in flatly stating that this crisis poses no threat to other population centers outside of Zaire. Tell that to the Sudanese who have had their own bout with this deadly pathogen. It seems reasonable to suggest that until this virus is isolated and classified (Ebola Kikwit?) the mode of transmission and its lethality will remain unknown.
