Scott,
I have also become interested in viral specifics and emerging viruses
although I am a geologist not a virologist. There are currently several
books available, concerning emerging and familiar viruses, and they are
geared to the "popular" market. The first is "The Coming Plague - Newly
Emerging Diseases In A World Out of Balance" by Laurie Garrett. It
discusses emerging viruses and AIDS and goes into public policy issues.
Some of it is rough going but I recommend it.
The next book available is"The Science of Viruses" by Ann Giudici Fettner.
This is much less technical than "The Coming Plague" but informative none
the less.
If you can find a copy (it is out of print), "Fever" by John Fuller is an
excellent account of the discovery of Lassa fever and the research that
was conducted at Yale on this virus.
Also, if there is anyone out there who can give me any information on
Prions or Viroids I would really appreciate it.
