TRANSGENIC PLANT VIRUS RESISTANCE: POSTDOCTORAL POSITION
Genetically engineer resistance to barley yellow dwarf virus.
Work independently and with others to develop a variety of
strategies that inhibit and/or exploit BYDV replication,
including ribozymes, replicase and more novel approaches.
You will be supported by the laboratory's extensive research
on BYDV replication and gene expression. Test transgenic
oats for transgene expression and virus resistance. The lab
has access to efficient oat transformation and regeneration
technology (we have transgenic oats in-hand) which will be
performed by a collaborating lab. Opportunities also exist
for study of novel translational control mechanisms, BYDV
replication, RNA stability, and transgene risk assessment.
BYDV, a small, positive sense RNA virus, is the most
economically important virus of wheat, barley and oats,
worldwide.
This is a two-year position beginning funded by the North
Central Biotechnology Initiative. Start date: Spring -
Fall, 1995. Experience in RNA biochemistry, molecular
virology, aphid transmission, or plant tissue culture is
desired.
