Although I'm a far cry from a virologist, the symptoms you describe sound an awful lot like a moderately severe 
strain of influenza. I could be completely mistaken, of course. If it is that serious, a hospital could easily take a blood 
sample and confirm diagnosis or send it to the Yale ArboVirus Labs for recognition. Chances are though, it's just a 
virulent strain of influenza.  Tell me if you ever find out exactly what it was..
