But the variability of HIV comes mainly from the RNA -> DNA step.
It is caused by the rather poor fidelity of reverse transcriptase.
At this point there is only ONE virus.  What you are looking at
is the DNA -> RNA step, the step that produces the millions of
viral particles.  The RNA polymerase used in this step, that from
the host, has a very high fidelity.  Therefore, the virus particles
produced will be identicle to the provirus that it came from.
